Hormonal Wellness Designed Around You
Hormonal changes can affect women differently as they move through different stages of life, with some experiencing symptoms during their 30s or 40s. Changes associated with declining hormone levels may contribute to concerns such as reduced energy, fatigue, mood changes, changes in hair and skin, weight changes, or decreased libido. Perimenopause may bring irregular periods and can continue for several years before menopause.
At Three Lakes MD Weight Loss & Wellness, our approach begins with comprehensive laboratory testing to better understand your individual hormone levels and identify areas that may require support. When appropriate, we use bioidentical hormones designed to closely mirror the hormones naturally produced by the body. Our goal is to develop an individualized approach that supports hormonal balance and helps address symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause.

What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Through regular monitoring, hormone level adjustments, and healthy nutrition and exercise, our goal is to help you feel your best and support your overall quality of life. Bioidentical hormone therapy uses hormones that are designed to closely match those naturally produced by the body. When appropriate, individualized hormone support with estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone may help address symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Bioidentical Hormones vs. Synthetic Hormones
Understanding the differences between your hormone options
Bioidentical Hormones
Naturally Matched Hormone Support
Hormones designed to closely match those naturally produced by the body, with treatment tailored to your symptoms, health history, and laboratory results. Ongoing monitoring helps your provider adjust your treatment when needed and ensure your care continues to align with your individual needs.
- Derived from plant-based sources such as wild yam or soy
- Designed to be chemically and functionally identical to human hormones
- Processed by the body similarly to naturally produced hormones
- Treatment is individualized based on symptoms, medical history, and laboratory results
- Hormone levels can be monitored and adjusted as needed
Synthetic Hormones
Different Chemical Structure
Synthetic hormones are manufactured with chemical structures that differ from naturally produced human hormones. Your provider can review the available options, discuss potential considerations, and determine what may be appropriate for you based on your health history, symptoms, and treatment goals.
- Manufactured with a chemical structure different from naturally produced human hormones
- Processed differently by the body
- May produce different physiological responses

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Hormones and Why Are They Important?
Hormones play an essential role in many of the body’s functions, including metabolism, energy, mood, reproduction, and the regulation of cells and organs. Hormone levels can change with age, menopause, illness, or other health conditions. When hormone levels decline, some people may experience changes that affect their physical and emotional well-being. Hormone therapy may be considered when appropriate based on your symptoms, health history, and laboratory results.
What Hormones Are Commonly Used in Hormone Therapy?
Hormone therapy may involve estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, or other hormones depending on an individual’s needs. Some hormone products are synthetic, while bioidentical hormones are designed to have the same molecular structure as hormones naturally produced by the human body. Your provider will evaluate your health history, symptoms, and laboratory results to determine which treatment options may be appropriate for you.
How Are Bioidentical Estrogen and Progesterone Produced?
Bioidentical hormones are designed to have the same molecular structure as hormones naturally produced by the human body. Certain hormone ingredients can be derived from plant sources such as soy or wild yam and are then processed into prescription medications. When hormone therapy is appropriate, your provider can recommend the formulation, dose, and delivery method based on your individual needs.
How Do Bioidentical and Synthetic Hormones Differ?
Bioidentical and synthetic hormones can differ in their molecular structure, formulation, and how they are prescribed. Bioidentical hormones are designed to closely match hormones naturally produced by the body, while some synthetic hormones have different chemical structures. The benefits, risks, and potential side effects vary depending on the specific hormone and individual patient. Your provider can discuss the available options and help determine which approach is appropriate for you.
Why Might My Doctor Not Prescribe Bioidentical Hormones?
Hormone therapy approaches can vary between healthcare providers based on their training, experience, clinical judgment, and the patient’s health history. Some providers may have more experience with conventional hormone therapies, while others may offer bioidentical hormone options. At Three Lakes MD, treatment decisions are based on an individualized evaluation, including your symptoms, medical history, and appropriate laboratory testing.
What Are the Signs of Low Progesterone?
Changes in progesterone levels may be associated with symptoms such as mood changes, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, cramping, and changes in the menstrual cycle. Because these symptoms can have several possible causes, laboratory testing and a comprehensive medical evaluation can help your provider better understand your individual hormone levels and overall health.
How Can Progesterone Support Women's Health?
Progesterone plays an important role in reproductive health and works together with estrogen to support hormonal balance. It is involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and other functions throughout a woman’s life. When hormone therapy is being considered, your provider can evaluate whether progesterone may be appropriate based on your symptoms, hormone levels, medical history, and individual treatment goals.
Our Process
Treatment for Women
Your hormone therapy journey begins with a personalized evaluation and comprehensive lab work. We take the time to understand your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and goals, then use your results to develop and monitor a treatment approach tailored to your individual needs.
Initial Evaluation & Lab Work
Complete a brief medical history and symptoms questionnaire alongside your laboratory testing. If you live outside the area, we can help arrange lab work at a convenient location near you.
Personalized Hormone Consultation
Once your lab work is complete, your initial consultation can take place as early as three days later. Your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, goals, and blood work to determine an appropriate treatment approach.
Ongoing Monitoring & Follow-Up
Regular follow-up helps ensure your hormone levels and treatment remain appropriate for your needs. During the first year, appointments are scheduled every three months with required lab work. After the first year, follow-ups move to every six months, and from the third year onward, annual visits are typically required.
Personalized Pharmacy & Delivery
We work with a selected compounding pharmacy for hormone prescriptions. Medications are shipped discreetly to your home, typically the day after your order is placed, with delivery handled through FedEx.
